How many grad schools should i apply to?

You can attend just one graduate school. Hence, you need to choose an institution that offers the most appropriate course suited to your needs. Moreover, the institution should be a good one, just the perfect launch pad for a wonderful career.

Should you apply to several programs at a time or prioritize and apply for the top one in the list only?  How many is plenty and how many is sufficient?

What to consider?

There should be some reasonable limit set on the number of grad schools to apply. First, take into consideration the costs involved to apply to several schools.

With each application, you need to pay for standardized test scores, transcripts, non-refundable application fee and postage. Some programs may require high application fees.

Follow-up will also be required to ensure receipt of all materials. Hence, more programs means spending more time.

Also is present a limit on acceptance rates. With increase in application numbers, the odds of getting accepted increases likewise.

However, law of ‘diminishing returns’ tends to apply at some point in time. Applying for several programs might mean not having sufficient time to spend on the applications. This, in turn, hampers quality.

So, how many grad schools should i apply to? Apply to several grad schools, but not all the programs that you come across. Choose programs wisely that matches your specific educational and career requirements.

This will be more realistic. Research on your interests, goals, credentials, competition, etc. and select the course to match your needs.
