Haydn’s principal patron was the Esterházy family, which was one of the most powerful and richest in Europe. Haydn had been working for them since 1761 as a composer, conductor, teacher and copyist.

The Prince Nikolaus I (1790-1847) who ruled over all of. Hungary entrusted his secretary with the task to find an appropriate tutor for his children. He eventually hired Haydn in 1809 and he became a member of their household  Until 1824 when he retired from this position following Nikolaus’ death. Haydn was a prolific composer and had many patrons during his lifetime.

One of the most prominent of his patrons is Prince Nikolaus II Esterházy. Who helped Haydn with getting commissions for new compositions. The two were close because they shared similar musical tastes.

But also because Nikolaus II’s wife, Countess Maria Anna Nepomucena Walpurgis de Kerlabo (known as Marie Anne) took care of Haydns daughter while he was away on business.
