What Transmission Is In My Truck

Introduction

Many of us drive a truck for a long time and maintain it as well. But when there is any problem with the gear, we have to rush to our mechanics.

There you will hear about transmission and some technical stuff that may go over the head. But have you ever thought about what transmission is in my truck. You should look into it; trust me, it helps.

Type of Transmission You Will See

If you look over the internet, you will find that people say there are over 200 types of transmission. That might be true because two cars of the same model released in different years can slightly differ in transmission. Still, there are mainly four kinds of transmission that can be in your truck.

Manual

It is the most common and classic kind of transmission. You can identify manual transmission quite easily. The shift stick will have numbers 1 to 6 and R, and there will be a cluch padel.

Semi-Automatic

In Semi-Automatic, you will have to push and pull the shift stick for changing gear. In some cars, you will find a simple shift handle or buttons under the driving wheel.  The only thing it lacks from the manual is that you don’t have to push any clutch pedal.

Automatic

For a newbie, this is the best transmission to learn car driving. You can recognize the system by looking at the shifter letters “P” “D,” “R,” “N,” “L.” All you have to do is follow the letters, and the car will be set for driving.

If you want to drive forward, take the shifter to “D” for reverse “R” and to stop “P.” The computer in the car will decide the gear when you press the gas padel.

CVT – Continuously Variable Transmission

CVT is almost automatic but slightly advanced than that. Just like automatic, you will find “PRRNL” on the shifter. But in this system, the car doesn’t have any gear. The computer will decide how much power the car needs.

Find From Other Sources

If you are still confused about the transmission type on your truck, don’t worry. There are more ways. The manufactures provide enough to help you get more information about cars or trucks.

Owners Manual

It is the first place you should look at to get any information. The manual should give you every little detail about your truck.

Driver Door

Open the driver’s side door. Look for a small white sticker with black writing on it. That will give you some information about the transmission in your truck.

Under The Hood or Oil Pan

Some truck makers add a serial number under the hood or oil pan. If you can’t find any sticker under the hood, take a torch and look into the oil pan. You may find any tag that your mechanic will be able to trace.

VIN

Lastly, you can use the Vehicle Identification Number or VIN to check your truck’s transmission system. You can decode the 17 digit code or just search it in any online VIN checker.

Conclusion

If you ask, why bother to know what transmission is in my truck? I will say you have to know because it is the only way to learn about gear repairing costs.

Also, you can understand how fuel-efficient your truck is in comparison to the transmission system.
